Football Recruiting: Chaos or Panic Time?

With the December 31 firing of veteran football coach Glen Mason and the January 15 hiring of former Denver Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster as his replacement, the Dinky Gopher Nation is wondering about recruiting for the upcoming season.

* Fact: The football Gophers were 6-7 in 2006 and didn't scare anyone, especially on defense.

* Fact: Rivals.com rates the upcoming class recruited by Mason 54th best in the country. The only Big Ten teams with lower rankings are Indiana (#61) and Purdue (#62). Even Northwestern and Michigan State have more highly regarded classes.

* Fact: Any time there is a complete coaching overhaul, some of the committed recruits will probably decide to go elsewhere. Brewster has elected to keep none of Mason's assistants, two of whom had been kept on to keep recruiting afloat. Those two, Luke Tressel and Gordy Shaw, have received walking papers.

Is it time to panic?

Maybe not.

First, let's look at the class Mason recruited. Rivals shows 20 total commits, of which there are zero five star players, 1 four star and 7 three stars. Of the twenty, five are Jucos. Of the fifteen high school recruits, eleven are from Minnesota and Wisconsin. The highest-regarded player is four star DE Anthony Jacobs. He's rated as the finest prospect in Minnesota and 14th in the country at his position. None of the other recruits are listed as either top 2 in the state or top 25 at their position.

The teams needs bodies. Many of the existing recruits are solid, but none appear on paper to be truly exceptional. Only time will tell how they turn out. So far, at least the in-state guys are sticking.

Second, pretty much every media report cites Brewster as a strong recruiter. He plans to beef up the emphasis on getting the best Minnesota talent, and that will help in the long run. There have also been reports that he's going to see how firm some of the oral commitments given to out-of-state schools are -- I wouldn't expect him to be able to change many minds at this point, but as a breath of fresh air, at least he'll get a listen that Mason and his staff wouldn't.

These may not be enough to make the Nation optimistic about 2007 football prospects, but it's enough to prevent full-blown panic. Next checkup: February 7, national signing day.

State of the Nation: Gopher Sports Blogs

Starting a blog ... it's serious business. Except when you're doing it for grins and don't really care otherwise. Still, when starting up a new venture, I read somewhere -- could have been at the Carlson School -- that you should investigate the "competition".

So let's do that.

How many similar blogs are out there already? According to a brief Google search, here are the few that I came up with:

Gopher Sports Blog -- Appears to be the definitive "unofficial" blog for all things Gopher. Andy Swartz posts regularly with both news and opinion. I'll definitely be bookmarking this one and visiting often.

Gopher Hole -- Also a pretty comprehensive unofficial site, covering the major sports.

Golden Gopher Hockey Blog -- All things hockey and only hockey.

Fire Glen Mason -- Game over. For more generalized Minnesota sports commentary, the author posts at Midwest Sports Rubes. Other blogs in this vein: Firemason.com and Fireglenmason.com. Huh.

And there you have it. Six blogs, three of which are devoted to the firing of (now ex-) football coach Glen Mason.

Yep, I think there's room for one more.

Thank You, Doofus

Welcome to the Dinky Gopher Nation - a largely random blog source for information, (stupid) commentary and (stupid) criticism of and about University of Minnesota athletics.

About the name ... Credit must be given to Star Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse and/or whichever poor flunky writes headlines for the sports section. Just when I was about to go with a plain vanilla "Gopher Sports Blog", BAM! My man Reusse comes through with the headline "There's a Gopher Nation? If so, it's a dinky one".

Suggesting that he hoped to duplicate the accomplishments of Childress was not Brewster's lone gaffe. He also said he planned to take "the Gopher Nation" to a Rose Bowl.

You should know this, Coach: The Red Sox have a Nation. The Buckeyes have a Nation.

What we have here, Tim, is Dinkytown. It's both an on-campus business district and an apt description for the number of people who care intensely about Gophers football after four decades of nothingness.

We are the Dinky Gopher Nation. Feel the love. It may be the withered, bitter kind of love you'd get from a grandparent who's been sucking on lemons for a dozen consecutive years, but it's still love. We even have some for you, Patrick Reusse.
